Re-Imagining STEM Equity Utilizing Postdoc Pathways
How high can we RISE?
RISE UPP leverages the successes of two state university systems that have developed and implemented inter-institutional approaches to diversify faculty through postdoctoral recruitment, training, and “conversion” into faculty positions: The University System of Maryland’s (USM) NSF AGEP PROMISE Academy (APAA) and the University of California (UC) resident’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP).
Model Partners
The AGEP PROMISE Academy Alliance (APAA) for the University System of Maryland was generated to develop, implement, self-study, evaluate, and disseminate a state-level AGEP Alliance model to increase the number of historically underrepresented minority tenure-track faculty in the biomedical sciences.
The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships, professional development and faculty mentoring to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at UC.

How far can we scale?
The Alliance will bring these two university systems together as Core Model Partners, which aim to provide support to 3 additional state university systems that will replicate and adapt their models as Scaling Partners: the University of Texas System, the Texas A&M University System, and the University of North Carolina System.
Each Scaling Partner system has 5-8 institutions committed to collaborate and pilot reproductions of the Core Model Partner programs.
